Iran’s national freestyle wrestling team has stood on top of the podium following outstanding performances and glorious victories at the 2014 Asian Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan.
On Thursday, Masoud Esmailpoor claimed a gold medal after beating Bajrang Kumar of India in the final bout of the 61-kilogram weight class at the Daulet Sport Complex in the Kazakh capital, Astana.
The bronze medal went to Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan and Narmandakhyn Lkhamgarmaa from Mongolia.
Mostafa Hosseinkhani notched up the second successive win for Iran on Thursday in the 70-kilogram and defeated his Tajik competitor Somirsho Vokhidov. Japanese and Uzbek freestyle wrestlers Ken Hosaka and Ikhtiyor Navruzov collected the bronze medal.
Reza Afzali was also the winner in his final bout against Purevjavyn Onorbat of Mongolia in the 74-kilogram weight category. Ryoichi Yamanaka of Japan and Innokenti Innokentev from Kyrgyzstan clinched the bronze.
On Wednesday, Seyyed Ahmad Mohammadi, who had overcome his Indian, Kazakh and Mongolian rivals in his matches to the final bout, downed his North Korean opponent Kang Jin-hyok in the last encounter of the 65-kg weight class and won the first gold medal for Iran. Uzbek and Mongolian athletes Furkat Farmanov and Batchuluuny Batmagnai grabbed the bronze medal.
Meysam Mostafa-Jokar claimed Iran’s second gold medal in the final match of the 86-kilogram after he overpowered his Kazakh rival Aslan Kakhidze.
Mongolian Orgodolyn Uitumen and Rashid Kurbanov from Uzbekistan seized the bronze jointly.
Iran earned its third gold medal in the Asian tournament when freestyle champion and man-mountain Komeil Ghasemi defeated his Mongolian competitor Natsagsurengiin Zolboo in the final bout of the125-kilogram weight class on Wednesday.
Bronze medal went to Chinese freestyle wrestler Shang Hai and Daulet Shabanbay of Kazakhstan.
The 2014 Asian Wrestling Championships is being held at the Daulet Sport Complex in Astana, Kazakhstan. The event is taking place from April 23 to April 27, 2014.
The competitions serve as a key warm-up for athletes ahead of the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea in September.
